| The Octagonal Building |

The Octagonal Building is the best-kept wood building in Yanshuei Township, truly a local landmark with more than a century of history. Its wooden structure is simple and classic. The Ye family were famous Yanshuei sugar enterpreneurs during the Cing Dynasty. The Octagonal Building was a transit point for the Ye family¡¦s brown sugar business.
As the name suggests, the chief characteristic of the Octagonal Building is its shape. It was constructed by a master builder from Fuzhou. Originally the structure consisted of three rows of houses and two courtyards. The first row was destroyed by American military action in the Pacific War, and the second row was torn down even earlier to expand the courtyard during the Japanese occupation. The third row is the Octagonal Building as we know it today. It is two stories tall, the first built of brick, the second of wood. Fushimi-no-miya Sadanaru shinno of Japan once occupied this building. There is a stone tablet that is inscribed ¡§Fushimi-no-miya Sadanaru shinno royal relics, Yanshuei port royal site.¡¨ |

| Yuejin Port Water Park |

Yanshuei is famous for water. Because the port turns west from east to south like a crescent moon, it's called ¡§moon port¡¨ (Yuejin), too. In the Cing Dynasty, ships could sail directly from here to Fujian in China. It was a distribution center for commercial and agricultural products in the Jiayi and Tainan areas, doing excellent business and famous among travelers for the Eight Views of Yuejin. Now this prosperity has passed on, and there is only a small pond left to remind us of it. With the support of the country government, Yuejin Port has undertaken a revival, and we hope to hear more of it in the future. |

Nevertheless, from the old architecture found in Lord Alley, you can see how prosperous the past must have been. |
