Tainan City Government Urges Citizens to Prevent from Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue Fever Occurring After Heavy Rain (2021/08/09)

After continuous heavy rain, stagnant water is easily occurred in living environment and containers, allowing the breeding of mosquitoes and then possibly the outbreak of vector-borne communicable diseases such as Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue Fever if not being careful. Tainan City Government urges citizens that not only prevent from the COVID-19 pandemic, but also be reminded to inspect and clean indoor/outdoor containers and spots that hold water (e.g., top floors, balconies, back ditches and tires), in order to block the transmission of vector-borne communicable diseases.

Since the year (2021) began, there have been four indigenous cases of Japanese Encephalitis, while only imported Dengue Fever cases are reported. However, virus may still easily spread in communities as a result of rise in mosquitoes.

In terms of personal mosquito control measures, one shall avoid presenting in mosquito breeding sites (e.g., vegetable farms, pigsty, paddy fields) at dawn and nightfall. Screens can be installed in the household and mosquito nets can be applied when sleeping. When enjoying outdoor activities, one shall wear light-colored and long-sleeved clothes or use mosquito repellent spray approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfares to prevent mosquito bites.

It is noted that vaccination is an effective measure to prevent from Japanese Encephalitis. Citizens are reminded to let toddlers who are above 15 months old receive a vaccine at the public health center at each district or authorized medical facilities. Adults who find themselves in the risk of infection but without or with an unclear vaccination history are encouraged to get vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis (self-funded).
