March 13 is not only Tainan City’s Justice and Courage Memorial Day but also the day that lawyer Tang Te-chang was executed due to the 228 Incident. The Tang Te-chang Memorial Association organized the Lawyer Tang Te-Chang Justice and Courage 75th Anniversary Memorial event on Mar. 13. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che attended the event to show his regards and announced that a section of Zhongzheng Road will be renamed Techang Avenue.
Huang pointed out that the street name change is to show our gratitude to Tang for sacrificing his life to protect Taiwan. The Mayor also revealed that the address “No. 1, Techang Avenue” will be assigned to the symbolic National Museum of Taiwan Literature. He explained that the National Museum of Taiwan Literature has over a hundred years of history, and a bronze statue of Tang Te-chang directly faces the main entrance of the museum, symbolizing that he is safeguarding Taiwanese culture and his homeland. Thus it is very meaningful to give the museum this address.
The Bureau of Civil Affairs of Tainan City Government remarked that a street name adjustment would affect existing house numbers and habits of road users. However, it is nice to use street names to honor the history and inspire residents to identify with the place they are living in. Relevant government agencies will deliberate on how to honor the historical event while minimizing negative impacts on the citizens.
