Tainan Mayor Huang Travels to Taipei to Promote the Taiwan International Orchid Show

The 2023 Taiwan International Orchid Show will be held from March 4 to March 19 at the Taiwan Orchid Technology Park in Tainan’s Houbi District. Mayor Huang Wei-che of Tainan City visited Taipei 101 on February 22 to promote the upcoming event, along with Director-General Hu Jung-i of the Agriculture and Food Agency under the EY Council of Agriculture, Chairman Huang Wen-rong of the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, and Taipei 101 Chairman Chang Hsueh-shun. Mayor Huang said that this year's orchid show is the first year hosted by the central government, so Tainan City will do its best to support and collaborate, making sure that the orchid show, as well as Taiwan's orchid industry, can continue to blossom and flourish.

According to Mayor Huang, thanks to the Taiwan International Orchid Show in 2022, Taiwan was able to achieve an impressive record of orchid export orders as high as NT$11.8 billion, surpassing the pre-pandemic levels. The 2023 Taiwan International Orchid Show is expected to see more robust B2B and B2C performance, so that the fresh orchids and related orchid products from Taiwan can be brought to more consumers around the world.Mayor Huang also proposed a very innovative “O2A” concept, which is to integrate the orchid flower with cultures and arts. He hopes that the orchid show will become an important venue for artists and culture industry professionals to come together and share their creative works inspired by orchids.

Mayor Huang also proposed to the public the idea of sending roses on Valentine’s Day and white orchids on White Valentine’s Day, since the White Valentine’s Day takes place during the orchid show. This will be a great way to make the orchid industry more relevant to people’s everyday life and to add a romantic touch to the orchid flower.

Director-General Hu Jung-i of the Agriculture and Food Agency commended the past efforts by the Tainan city government in hosting the Taiwan International Orchid Show. It is now one of the three largest orchid shows in the world. Starting from this year, the Council of Agriculture is in charge, and will continue to work closely with the Tainan city government to deliver more creative and impactful orchid shows year after year.

Last year, in support for Ukraine, Taiwanese orchid growers used nano-printing technology to produce orchids with gradient colors of blue and yellow that resembles the Ukrainian flag. Following the same spirit, “Turkish-flag orchids” are created this year to express Taiwan’s support and blessings after the earthquake in the hope that the Turkish people will soon recover from the disaster and rebuild its homeland.

To bring Taiwan orchids to people of all ages, “Orchidsaur” was created as the mascot for this year's exhibition, based on the fact that actually orchids and dinosaurs once lived in the same time period. At the trade show, visitors will see a 19-meter low “Orchidsaur”, along with its good friend, the Plesiosaur. We hope families, as well as visitors across all age groups, can join the orchid show to experience the vitality of Taiwan’s orchid industry.
