Mayor’s remark:
1. Yesterday (22nd) Officers Tu Ming-Cheng and Cao Ruei-Jie were killed in the line of duty. They fought for Tainan's safety to the very last minute, and their deaths have brought about shock and disbelief among the public. I have great respect for the Tainan City Police Department, which found and arrested the perpetrator within 24 hours of the incident, restoring Tainan’s safety. Precinct 2, Precinct 3, the Criminal Investigation Corps, Kaohsiung City Police Department, Hsinchu City Police Department, Prosecutor Huang and colleagues from Tainan District Prosecutors Office all aided in the arrest of the perpetrator. In addition, I would like to thank President Tsai, Premiere Su, National Police Agency Director-general Huang, and Minister of the Interior Hsu for assisting in this matter. Now, I would like to ask everyone to join me in a minute of silence to pay our respects to Officers Tu and Cao.
2. I ask the Public Works Bureau to assist the Social Affairs Bureau in monitoring the construction progress and subsequent handover of the operational transfer project for converting the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Sinying Hospital, Beimen Branch, into a diverse, long-term care resource center. The center is set to open on October 11. The Public Works Bureau and Social Affairs Bureau should ensure that all preparations are in place.

In addition to proactively developing new sources of income and conserving expenditure, a big part of ensuring healthy local finance is to make financial plans before completing payments for major construction projects. By eliminating the need to spend large amounts of money in unforeseen situations, we can minimize Tainan’s financial burden.

(1) In addition to Madou District, Siaying District and Guantian District are also producers of quality pomelos. However, Tainan’s pomelos are mostly sold internally, with only a small amount exported. In contrast, pomelos produced in other cities are mostly exported. With recent hurdles in exports, we can expect other cities to turn to selling pomelos within Taiwan. The Agriculture Bureau should put regulation measures in place to prepare for this shift.
(2) The farmer’s associations that produce pomelos have formed a pomelo marketing alliance. Please communicate with this alliance and assist in expanding marketing channels for both fresh and processed pomelos.
