Tainan City Government Officials Attend COP 27 In Egypt To Share Tainan’s Experience And Promote The Tainan 400th Anniversary Event

A delegation from Tainan City Government attended the Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27) and stayed there between Nov. 5 and 12. In addition to visiting the booths of other countries, Tainan City Government Environmental Protection Bureau Director-general Shih-Chieh Hsieh presented Tainan City’s results on recycling and reusing waste at the Thutmose venue. He talked about the latest policy trends concerning climate change, shared Tainan’s efforts in mitigating climate change, and also invited the international audience to take part in the Tainan 400th anniversary event.

During his talk, Hsieh showed how Tainan City Government encourages resource recycling and reuse by presenting the city’s achievements in converting kitchen waste into organic fertilizer, recycling incinerator bottom ash and heat, repurposing discarded furniture and fallen tree branches, and setting up solar panels on top of landfills.

Hsieh also shared Tainan’s efforts in mitigating climate change. He remarked that Mayor Huang Wei-che announced the 2050 Tainan Net-Zero Roadmap on June 1 this year. In the coming 30 years, the city will focus on energy transition, low-carbon green transportation, residence and office building energy efficiency, and circular economy & green living to reduce overall carbon emissions. The city government will also support larger corporates and SMEs in reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout their entire supply chains to eventually meet Tainan City’s net-zero sustainability goals.

The Director-general also invited the international audience to visit Tainan in 2024 as the city will commemorate its 400th anniversary that year. During the event, Tainan will present the city’s past, present, and future to the world.

COP 27 is hosted by Egypt in Sharm El Sheikh between Nov. 6 and 18. A total of 196 countries took part in the event. The summit kicked off with discussions concerning whether to compensate poor nations which are severely inflicted by global warming.  As a member of the global city network, Tainan City also took part and shared its experiences and suggested solutions for climate change issues to let more international partners know about Taiwan and Tainan.
