Minutes of Tainan City Government’s 561st Municipal Administrative Meeting Mayor’s remarks 9/20/2022

Mayor’s remarks:
1.    The city council is currently conducting the budget review for 2023. I urge bureaus that haven’t undergone review yet to proactively communicate with council members. If council members express opposing opinions, please provide a courteous explanation. We are all looking forward to the budget review passing without hiccups.
2.    Tainan was struck by a massive earthquake on February 6, 2016. Eastern Taiwan also went through a series of earthquakes in 2018. The recent earthquake did not reach 5 on the seismic scale in Tainan. In other words, the criterion for conducting bridge inspections was not met. That being said, we must be prepared for even bigger earthquakes. The seismic resistance of bridges and other infrastructure should be tested. I ask the Public Works Bureau and Bureau of Urban Development to distribute old building review guides to the public while also assisting other units to conduct secondary reviews.
3.    September is national traffic safety month. To provide citizens with a better traffic environment, we should promote the traffic literacy of both pedestrians and vehicle operators. Different approaches should be taken to disseminate this information to children, elementary school children, college students, and adults. I hope that citizens can become better drivers/pedestrians and increase their awareness of traffic safety to prevent accidents from happening. Tainan has historically had a higher number of A1 and A2 traffic accidents. The municipal government uses fines as a means to penalize traffic violations. Yet, fines are simply a means to an end. Effort on the part of the government and the public is also required to improve traffic conditions in the city.
